PURPOSE:To easily attain the high accuracy of a device without receiving the limitation of a memory by generating directly the multivalue driving binary data string of a direct driven type of thermal head at a comparator without using a memory. CONSTITUTION:A threshold value for the uniform binarization of a gradation data corresponding to a recording tone from a ROM 61 is generated, and is inputted to a comparator 62. The comparator 62 compares a threshold value A with a gradation data B, and outputs signals B>=A and B<A. An AND gate 1 outputs a logical produce between the signal B>=A and a recording pulse masking signal, and an AND gate 2 outputs the logical product between the previous stated signal B<A and an auxiliary pulse masking signal. An OR gate 3 outputs a logical sum of the outputs from the previous stated AND gates 1 and 2. Thereby, the binary data string corresponding to a gradation level to be recorded can be directly generated.
