PURPOSE:To improve the liquid leak-proof performance by specifying the quantity of mercury in a negative electrode zinc alloy per unit contacting area against the negative electrode zinc alloy on the inner face of a negative electrode container. CONSTITUTION:The quantity of mercury in a negative electrode zinc alloy per unit contacting area against the zinc alloy under existence of an electrolyte on the inner face of a negative electrode container is regulated to 0.4-7.0mg/cm<2>. With such arrangement, the quantity of mercury for gelation is reduced to confine amalgamation of the copper layer on the inner face of the negative electrode container, within the points directly contacting with the negative electrode zinc and the vicinity, thereby no amalgamation can develop to the tip section of the negative electrode container. Consequently, creeping phenomena of alkaline electrolyte due to development of amalgamation can be prevented, resulting in considerable improvement of the leak-proof characteristic. |
