PURPOSE:To attain a process in which no image deterioration occurs by recovering a half tone image by applying a prescribed process on a binary-coded image data. CONSTITUTION:First of all, when the image is not a binary-coded image, an original image A, for example, is binary-coded using a dither matrix DM1, and is changed to binary-coded image B. Next, the image B is divided into the blocks of appropriate sizes for example, the size of four by four. The number of black picture elements within each block is counted, and the density level of each block is estimated, and a half tone image, the average density of which is represented with a figure shown in B1, can be obtained. Thus, a high resolution can be held increasing the number of gradation, and the half tone image in which no image deterioration occurs is recovered, and various kinds of processes can be performed.
