Appts. and method for retarding lubricant leak through a seal of a sewing machine frame, comprises removing enough air from the frame interior, pref. by a vacuum pump, to produce an inward air flow through the seal. Specifically the vacuum pump is outside the machine frame, or is in an internal cavity which is vented to atmos, and is connected to a sealed cavity contg. lubricant and also the seal. Oil is prevented from soiling workpieces, esp. with industrial machines, without using complicated and expensive sealing qaskets.
