PURPOSE:To reduce the variation in carbonization time and to efficiently and stably operate a coke oven, by controlling the amt. of charging coal, i.e., changing the amt. of the charging coal according to the properties of the coal. CONSTITUTION:A process for preparing coke comprising carbonizing coal, wherein the amt. of coal per carbonization chamber in a coke oven is calculated based on the data on the properties of charging coal which has been previously determined so as to attain a constant coal carbonization time and that the amt. of the charging coal is controlled so that the actual amt. of the charging coal is equal to the calculated amt. The amt. of the charging coal has been currently determined by mounting a measuring instrument in each hopper of a charging car or by measuring the weight of the charging car. In the current method, an exact amt. of the charging coal cannot be determined, because the amt. of the coal practically charged in the oven is determined by subtracting the amt. of the output coal from the measured amt. The control of the amt. of the charging coal based on the calculated amt. of the coal enables the realization of exact, rapid and safe operation of a coke oven.
