PURPOSE:To eliminate the unbalanced operating duty of a head and improve printing speed by dividing printing data so as to equalize the action of the head, further break down the action of the head into a plurality of action patterns and select an action pattern which permits printing in a shortest time to allow printing action to be performed. CONSTITUTION:Data transmitted from an external control is received and processed by a main control 7, then is stored in a buffer memory 7d. The counting of character and line counts is executed in the receiving process for storing printing data into the buffer memory 7d. A command requesting positional information on a carriage 3a is transmitted to a subcontrol 8a. Decision is made as to whether or not printing data are available for a line following the line which is about to be printed according to the content of a work area storing the number of printing lines received now. If printing data are available for the next line, printing division points are sought by seeking printing start and end positions and printing length. After this, an action pattern which turns out to be the shortest one is selected from among a calculated and stored action time table to execute a succeeding printing action.
