Reactor tube packing comprises a cylindrical honeycomb, pref. of alpha alumina or magnesia, supported on inverted conical shelves vertically slidable on a central mounting shaft. The tubular housing may be heated to achieve the desired reaction, temperature and made to withstand pressures of 2-40 atmospheres. Alternatively spacing sleeves may be used to support the honeycomb which may be impregnated with a catalyst to enhance the speed of reaction. The device is distortion free during the extremes of reaction conditions.
