PURPOSE:To improve the resolution of a video signal to be reproduced by recording an FM-modulated luminance signal at the surface layer part of a magnetic tape of magnetic layer, and recording an FM-modulated chrominance signal at a depth layer part of the tape. CONSTITUTION:A compound video signal inputted from an input terminal 1 is separated to the luminance signal and the chrominance signal at a Y/C separa tion circuit 2. The luminance signal is FM-modulated at an FM modulation circuit 3, and is recorded on the tape with a rotary head 5 for the luminance signal through a recording amplifier 4. Meanwhile, the chrominance signal is demodulated to a baseband at a chrominance signal demodulation circuit 6, and is changed to color difference signals R-Y, and B-Y, and hereafter, either of them is selected by every 1H and is recorded on the tape with a rotary head 11 for the chrominance signal. At such a time, the gap of the head 11 for the chrominance signal is made larger than that of the head 5 for the luminance signal, and an FM-modulated color difference signal is recorded at the depth layer part of the same track, and the FM-modulated luminance signal on the surface layer part.
