PURPOSE:To prevent timing marks from being misread even if the edge of a document becomes dirty by using the output of a data mark detecting means corresponding to the output of a timing mark detecting means as read data. CONSTITUTION:When the document is fed and reaches the detection start position for timing marks, a timing mark detecting circuit control part 7 outputs an ON signal to a timing mark detecting circuit 5. The circuit 5 signifies the output signal of a pre-amplifier 3 until the control part 7 outputs an OFF signal, thereby detecting timing marks. Consequently, the control part 7 makes the operation of the circuit 5 only in an area where timing marks are recorded on the basis of a preset value, so even if there is a signature, seal impression, or stain present at the edge of the document, it is never read as a timing mark as long as it is not in the area where the timing marks are recorded.
