PURPOSE:To attain high performance and long life, by connecting gas feed tubes to external corresponding to the gas feed side notches of separators, and by connecting gas discharge tubes to external manifolds corresponding to the gas discharge side notches of the separators. CONSTITUTION:Oxidizing gas is conducted to gas passages, differently for respective stages, from feed side notches 13 communicating with the gas passages on the bottoms of separators 4 different for the respective states, so that the oxidizing gas flows toward discharge side notches 14. Fuel gas is conducted to gas passages, differently for the respective stages, from feed side notches 11 communicating with the gas passages on the tops of the separators 4 different for the respective stages, so that the fuel gas flows toward discharge side notches 12. The separators 4 are oriented differently for the stages so that the oxidizing gas OG, OG-1, OG-2, OG-3 and the fuel gas FG-1, FG-2, FG-3, FG flow oppositely to each other while sandwiching unit cells comprising electrolyte plates 1 and electrodes 2, 3 in the respective stages. As a result, the temperatures of the fuel gas and the oxidizing gas are set near the average temperature of both the gases to make the generation of thermal stress less likely to lengthen the life of a fuel cell. |
