PURPOSE:To hold a molten metal in a floating state and to obtain an ingot having the final shape without using a casting mold by impressing DC current and DC magnetic flux to the molten metal flowing out of a horizontal nozzle in such a manner that the current and magnetic flux intersect orthogonally with each other. CONSTITUTION:The outlet of the horizontal nozzle 2 is held closed by a dummy bar 8 and the molten metal 3 is energized from a DC power source 11. On the other hand, the DC magnetic flux is impressed thereto from an electromagnet or permanent magnet 6 in the vertical direction, e.g, in the direction orthogonal with the DC current. The molten metal 4 flows out of the nozzle 4 when the bar 8 is moved in an arrow direction. The DC magnetic flux is impressed from the electromagnet or permanent magnet 6 to the molten metal 4 in such a manner that the direction of electromagnetic force is reverse from the direction of the gravity; therefore, the molten metal is held floated in the air. The molten metal solidifies while moving in the arrow direction and is quickly cooled by the gaseous N2 injected from a refrigerant cooler 7 during this time. |
