A sensor is used to measure the level of a liquid (11) by means of a light-transmitting tube (14) in which an elongated light source is arranged. The tube (14) dips into the liquid (11) in which the tube (14) and the elongated light source extend both above and below a level (12). At least one photosensitive element (20), which is connected to the end face of the sensor averted from the liquid (11) generates a signal corresponding to the level (12) of the liquid (11). The tube (14) is filled with an optically conductive reference medium, preferably a reference liquid (5), the optical refractive index of the reference medium preferably being less than or equal to the refractive index of the liquid (11) to be measured. The photosensitive element (20) is installed in the surface of the tube (14) averted from the liquid (11). The light source has an elongated, light-transmitting body to one end face of which light (24) is applied. The body has sites (25, 26) for scattering the irradiated light (24). <IMAGE>
