This invention prevents inconvenient phenomena from being caused by an image forming operation starting signal being generated by mistake to thereby start the image forming operation when an image forming apparatus is not in its normal installed state for use, for example, when the apparatus is in its carried state or its erected state with one side thereof facing downward. As shown, the apparatus is in its erected state in which a weight 35 acts on a lever 31 to block a photointerrupter 32. If this remains blocked for a given time period, a control unit 36 operates to inhibit operation of the machine. In other embodiments, the apparatus is inhibited if a carrying handle is moved to its carrying position or if a paper supply tray is in a non-operative position or if a handle portion of an original pressing plate is in a given position.
