1343209 Fire-extinguishers ELECTROPLASTIC VERTRIEBS GmbH 19 April 1971 [14 March 1970] 24276/71 Heading A5A [Also in Division F2] A fire-extinguisher has a body (10) blowmoulded from thermoplastic plastics, and a head assembly (14) also of thermoplastics plastics screwed on to the neck (12) of the body. This head assembly has an annular concave recess on its underside, mating with the convex surface of the body, and concave sides which meet the concave recess at an acute angle at the outer edge. As shown, the body is made of polyethylene reinforced by glass fibres (11). The female screw thread 13, is of trapezoidal cross-section (Fig. 5) not shown, and the mating male thread is quadrant-shaped, so that a good seal is obtained by deformation of the threads, 23 is an annular seal. A tubular extension 25 of the head assembly has a pressure cartridge 26 screwed to its lower end and enclosed in the tube 29, also of plastics. Perforations 30 in the extension 25, allow extinguisher fluid to flow. An axial passage in the head assembly accommodates a striker 32, which is biassed upwards by a spring 40 bearing on a washer 39, but can be pressed downwards by a lever 37, pivoted at 36. Accidental operation is prevented by the insertion of a wedge between this lever and a groove in the top of the head assembly (Figs. 3, 4 and 5, not shown). When the striker is pressed downwards, it pierces the cartridge 26, releasing CO 2 , and also opens the valve 34, so that extinguisher fluid is forced out through the orifice 45. When the striker is released, the valve 34 closes again, and the extinguisher can thus be used repeatedly for a single filling. A mounting tray for the extinguisher is also described (Figs. 8, 9, 10 and 11 not shown). |
