Very viscous and relatively heavy products, for example gypsum, are introduced into a hopper and discharged therefrom by means of a product conveying apparatus. The conveying apparatus comprises an input device (14) in the form of a screw (19) which is rotatable directly above the bottom of a trough (17), said trough (17) and the screw (19) being horizontally rotatable relative to one another. The trough (17) has a number of openings (18) which open out into the receiving space of the hopper and are distributed evenly and in a circular manner around the centre of the trough bottom. The product to be stored in the hopper is fed to the openings (18) due to the rotation of the screw (19) and the relative movement between the screw (19) and the trough (17). The product is fed to the receiving space of the hopper and is distributed there by means of a horizontally rotatable screw conveyor (15) which is suspended by means of elevator cables in carriages which are drawn around the hopper in a path on the hopper roof (12) by means of a pull cable extending all around. When the product is discharged from the hopper, the conveying direction of the screw conveyor (15) is reversed so that the product is fed to the centre of the hopper where a vertical screw conveyor (16), opening out into a discharge opening in the hopper bottom, is mounted with at least two conveying screws (45, 46).
