Process for the selective or simultaneous separation of pollutants, in particular sulphur oxides and/or nitrogen oxides, from flue gases by irradiating the flue gases with electron beams. An optimum beam efficiency is ensured, inter alia, by the process being carried out successively in stages. In this case, the irradiation of the flue gas is carried out in stages successively with partial irradiation doses. The desired total irradiation dose is given by the sum of the partial doses. The flue gas is mixed between the irradiation stages. At least two stages are preferably used, forming one respective processing line, which stages are each equipped with at least one electron accelerator or electron acceleration head as an electron beam source.
