PURPOSE:To obtain continuously an extremely thin polarizing film having the reliable molecule orienting property at ordinary temp. and pressure by spreading an org. substance on pure water or an aqueous soln. to form a monomolecular film and by transferring the film to the surface of a substrate on which a polarizing film is to be formed. CONSTITUTION:The org. substance is spread on pure water or the aqueous soln. to form the monomolecular film and this film is transferred to the surface of a substrate on which to polarizing film is to be formed. NMA represented by the right formula or merocyanine represented by the left formula is preferably used as the polarizing org. substance. The nonlinear optical effect of NMA and that of the merocyanine are about 15 times and about 75 times that of an inorg. substance, respectively. The aqueous soln. may contain metallic or nonmetallic ions in pure water but an aqueous soln. contg. bivalent cations is preferably used. Thus, the extremely thin polarizing film having the reliable molecule orienting property can be formed continuously and directly on a desired article at the ordinary temp. and pressure with an inexpensive device. |
