Process for denitrifying drinking water. The nitrate-polluted raw water is introduced, possibly after addition of dosing substances, into a biological denitrification stage. The treated mixture of water and microorganisms is introduced into a secondary clarification stage. The pure water can be fed from the secondary clarification stage to a drinking water grid, that is, possibly, after further water treatment. Return sludge from the secondary clarification stage can be introduced into the denitrification stage. The raw water is introduced directly into the denitrification stage. The treated mixture from the denitrification stage passes at first without intermediate clarification into a secondary treatment stage having an aeration device for an aerobic secondary treatment. Only then is it introduced into the secondary clarification stage. In the denitrification stage, a high biomass density is maintained, e.g. in the range from 4 to 15 kg of DM/m<3>. Preferably, plug flow is employed. A plant is specified for carrying out the process with plug flow. <IMAGE>
