Two beam elements (LS1, LS2) are produced (25) from a light beam (LS) and are coupled into the interferometer arms (50, 51) of an interferometer. The interferometer arms can be parallel to one another. In the case of a parallel arrangement, they must be of different length. After passing through the interferometer arms, the two beam elements are superimposed on one another (56). The inertial speed is determined from the phase difference between the two beam elements, which phase difference is caused by the square of the Doppler effect. <IMAGE>
