Spiro-imidazole (I)[X=oxygen, sulfur; Y=hydrogen, halogen, alkyl; R=hydrogen, methyl, ethyl is prepd. for use as an inhibitor of aldose reductase. Compd. (II) is cyclized by acid-catalyst reaction to give spiro-imidazole (I). The ring-formation reaction is performed at 0≦̸C- solvent reflux temp. and proper solvent is benzene or toluene and used acid is Lewis acid, such as aluminium chloride or titanium chloride. In case of using hot sulfuric acid as used acid, the reaction temp. is 50-90≦̸C.
