<p>APPLICATION OF JOSEPH P. CARMODY CONTROL SYSTEM FOR A SELECTIVELY CONFIGURABLE MACHINE CONTROL PANEL A machine control panel includes a matrix of pressure sensitive switches and a matrix of light emitting indicators, e.g., light emitting diodes (LED's) in a substantially coplanar array. An aperture array formed by a flexible cover sheet having an opaque coating surrounding a matrix of transparent apertures is positioned on top of the LED and switch array with corresponding ones of the LED's and apertures in alignment. Unused apertures in the aperture matrix corresponding to unused LED's are selectively closed by opaque aperture covers. Switch identifying covers in the form of labels are positioned on top of the aperture array to visually indicate selected ones of the switches. Switches with associated LED's have switch identifiers with transparent apertures aligned with selected ones of the LED's and open apertures in the aperture array. Additional opaque display elements and system interconnections are appropriately placed on the aperture array to form a desired machine control panel layout. A flexible transparent overlay located on top of the aperture array may be used to protect the labels and aperture covers while enabling a switch operating pressure to be transferred to the switches. Additionally, an enclosure can be provided as a protective housing for the machine control panel and as a means for enabling the panel to be mounted in an operative orientation on a suitable support associated with a machine to be controlled. A selectively configurable control system is connected to the LED and switch array to recognize only switch actuation inputs from preselected valid switches, e.g., those identified by labels, and, in turn, to energize only desired LED's e.g., those associated with actuated valid switches. Thus, the configurable control system is used to transfer the valid switch operation to the controlled machine while providing an LED indication on the machine control panel of valid switch actuation and associated machine system operation.</p> |
