PROCESS FOR PURIFYING VANCOMYCIN

New crystalline vancomycin diphosphate and its decalydrate were prepd. and used in purificn. or isolation of vancomycin. Thus, 2ml of 85%(w/v) alkali metal dihydrogen phosphate was added to a soln. of 10g vancomycin in 15ml H2O and the mixt. was cooled to 0≦̸C for 16hr. The growing ppt. was filtered and washed with 20ml isopropanol and 20ml diethyl ether and dried to give 7,5g vancomycin diphosphate(m.p. 194≦̸C). Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic, useful as an antibacterial agent and ruminant feed utilization enhancer and is esp. effective against gram-positive microbes, e.g. streptococci, staphylocci and Clostridium difficile, etc.
