A self-setting, foamed refractory composition comprises a particulate refractory material, a surfactant, water, a water soluble metal phosphate and alumina cement. The composition is suitable for forming a lining for a molten metal handling vessel such as a tundish or a ladle. The composition may be used to produce preformed shapes which are used to line the vessel or the composition may be used to produce a lining within the vessel.
