PURPOSE:To detect enterotoxin-producing Escherichia coli with a reliable, simple and quick process, by utilizing the phage infection specificity of an enterotoxin- producing Escherichia coli. CONSTITUTION:The Escherichia coli producing ST (heat-resistant enterotoxin) is detected by using a newly found phage M124 infecting specifically to the Escherichia coli producing only ST or both ST and LT (heat-sensitive enterotoxin), and lysing the cell. The detection process is based on the phage-infection specificity of the enterotoxin-producing Escherichia coli. The infectivity of M124 to the specimen bacteria can be determined easily by conventional process, e.g. crossing the phage liquid with the dispersion of the specimen bacteria on an agar medium, culturing at 37 deg.C for one night, and inspecting the presence or the density of the grown bacteria at the crossed part of the phage liquid. |
