The present invention relates to the manufacture of aerostatic bearings from a porous material having a denser surface layer, the denser surface layer being applied afterwards by coating processes. Possible coating processes are plasma spraying, detonation coating or vacuum coating and others. Bearings manufactured in such a manner have reproducible properties and are very wear-resistant.
