<p>Trans-1-methyl 1-(5-hydroxy 4-methyl 3-cyclohexcryl) ethanol for therapeutic use as a balsamic agent and respirator analeptic, is made by (a) reacting alpha-pipene with oxygenated water at 30% concn. and a hydroxylic solvent, pref. ethanol, in presence of a base, e.g. Na or K bicarbonate, at 35 deg.C max. to obtain alpha-pipene oxide; and (b) hydrolysing this in aq. soln. at pH 3-4 with external cooling of the reactor to maintain it at 60 deg.C max.</p> |
