A process for reducing the sulphur content of a crude gas stream is described, wherein the sulphur compounds present in the gas stream, in particular H2S, are converted to SO2 and/or SO3. The SO2 formed is removed by scrubbing with a solvent, and the rich solvent is regenerated and reused. To obtain simultaneously a higher sulphur recovery and more thoroughly purified waste gases, it is proposed to contact the rich solvent with a part stream of the crude gas for converting the SO2 to elemental sulphur and to separate off the elemental sulphur formed. <IMAGE>
