The invention relates to a method for the amplitude modulation of a transmission amplifier, with a device for switching the operating voltage of an amplifying component in two or more steps depending on the modulation voltage. In the invention, the shape of the envelope of the modulated oscillation is matched with the shape of the modulation voltage by controlling the angle of current flow in the amplifying component. The angle of current flow can be controlled depending on either the modulation voltage, the applied operating voltage or a parameter which provides a suitable measure for the difference between the shape of the envelope and the shape of the modulation voltage. <IMAGE>
