A slider-carrier is fixed to the tool mandrel with an epicyclic gear train to drive it via a pair of toothed wheels, an endless screw which controls the radial movement of the slider. A wheel with helicoidal teeth is engaged with the wheel of the gear train. A d.c. electric motor on the carrier drives the helicoidal gear via an endless screw reducing gear. A transducer is coupled to the motor. A control unit is mounted external to the slider-carrier and is coupled electrically to the motor and the transducer. The transducer may be an analog or a digital displacement transducer, and a tachometer may be provided.
