A solid state cell or timer has an anode of aluminium, zinc, magnesium or calcium, and a solid electrolyte consisting of a polymer material incorporating an inorganic salt to give a polymer/salt adduct. The polymer is for example polyethylene oxide. Various suitable electrolyte salts and cathode materials are disclosed.
