A cylinder head for internal combustion engines is described, which has a plate (2) of a thermally insulating, ceramic material held on the combustion chamber end of the cylinder head (1) assigned to each cylinder (7). In order to avoid the risk of cracking in the ceramic plate due to locally occurring high temperature gradients, it is proposed that recesses (6) with rounded bottoms be provided, uniformly distributed over the circumference on the radially outer edge of the plate (2), the depth of which recesses is calculated so that their radially innermost point lies approximately on a diameter corresponding to the cylinder bore (7). <IMAGE>
