PURPOSE:To produce a polymer having crosslinkages uniformly distributed in the polymer and high degree of water absorbing performance, by radically crosslinking a polyacrylic acid based polymer having a low crosslinking density and poor water absorbing property with a peroxide. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous composition, containing a partial alkali metal salt of polyacrylic acid as a principal component and optionally methacrylic acid, maleic anhydride, etc., as a minor component and having a low degree of crosslinking density with preferably <=60wt% moisture content is heated in the presence of a water-soluble peroxide radical initiator, e.g. dicumyl peroxide, to introduce crosslinkages thereinto by radical crosslinking. USE:Used as a sanitary material, e.g. sanitary napkins and paper diapers, etc.
