PURPOSE:To efficiently and easily obtain the titled high-purity hydrate useful as a chemotherapeutic drug without requiring a drying process to removed deposit water, by dispersing and immersing a raw material compound in a volatile hydrophobic organic medium containing water in a specific ratio. CONSTITUTION:2-(1-Piperazinyl)-8-ethyl-5,8-dihydro-5-oxopyrido[2,3-d]p yridine-6-- carboxylic acid (PPA for short) is dispersed into and immersed in a volatile hydrohphobic organic medium (e.g., chloroform, etc.) containing >=1pt.wt. water based on 5.5pts.wt. PPA, converted into its trihydrate and the aimed substance is separated from the organic medium by a conventional procedure. Preferably the dispersion and immersion are carried out at normal temperature or under heating for >=5 hours.
