PURPOSE:To reduce an equipment cost and the time for preparation by attachably and detachably dividing a head, body to be exclusively used and common body of a dummy bar and inserting the head and the body to be exclusively used into a casting mold from the upper part thereof and the common body from the lower part of the mold then connecting the head and the bodies. CONSTITUTION:The head 3 and the body 4 to be exclusively used are inserted by a lifting device 2-1 into the casting mold 7 from the upper part thereof upon completion of casting. On the other hand, the common body 5 is inserted by a dummy bar table 1 into the mold 7 from below the same and the body 5 is coupled to the body 4 in a roller apron to unite the head 3, the body 4 and the body 5 to one body. Casting is then started and the head 3 is brought into direct contact with a molten steel. The head is separated from the ingot when the ingot passes through pinch rolls 8. The head 3 and the body 4 are removed from the body 5 on the table 1 and the head and bodies are again returned onto a casting bed 6.
