PURPOSE:To improve the resolution of a character and a line drawing by extracting edge information from an input data and outputting a data binary- coded by dither processing and the result combined by, e.g., OR operation so as to prevent missing of edge information. CONSTITUTION:A gradation processing circuit converts each multi-value input data of Y,M,C into a binary data and applies area gradation processing to reflect the gradation of the input data onto an output data and is provided with 4 sets of units to process data of color components of Y,M,C,BK. The constitution of each unit is nearly the same. The 1st processing system is provided with a 8X8 averaging circuit 150 and a density pattern processing circuit 153 and the gradation processing by the density pattern method is applied in the processing system. The edge extracting circuit 151 of the 2nd gradation processing system is a 2-dimensional space filter, which attenuates the information other than the edge region and extracts only the edge information.
