PURPOSE:To intend to improve the luminous efficiency of a light emitting electron tube by applying the optimum voltage to excite the light emitting gas between the 2nd cathode and the anode along with applying a sufficient voltage to ionize the light emitting gas between the 1st cathode and the anode. CONSTITUTION:Electrons attracted toward the anode 3 from the 1st cathode 2a by DC source 5, after passing through the anode 3, collide with mercury atoms and ionize them. By this the space in the tube is neutralized electrically, and electrons emitted from the cathode 2a are injected in the whole space in the tube 1 to maintain the neutralization of the whole space in the tube. In this case the energy of the incident electrons is substantially high (ten and several eV) to induce the excitation luminescence of mercury atoms. By collision of these high energy electrons to the low energy thermoelectrons (lower than several eV) emitted from 2nd cathode 2b the energy of respective electrons can be equalized. Therefore a light emitting electron tube with positive current- voltage characteristics and yet with high luminous efficiency can be obtained.
