PURPOSE:To omit a memory for storing hammer pressure information and to make it possible to obtain printing having uniform density by desired hammer pressure, by obtaining hammer pressure information from carriage moving quantity information for performing proportional printing. CONSTITUTION:When a central processing unit 29 accesses one address of a third memory 32 storing carriage moving quantity information proportional to the character width of a character to be printed on the basis of inputted character data, the output data thereof s imparted not only to a space motor control unit 37 but also to a printing pressure data converting means 50. As a result, the hammer pressure information corresponding to the carriage moving quantity information is outputted to a printing hammer control unit 38 from the printing pressure data converting means 50 and a printing hammer is driven only for a conducting time capable of obtaing printing pressure having the intensity corresponding to the carriage moving quantity information. Therefore, a memory storing the printing hammer pressure information proportional to the character width of a character to be printed having been provided heretofore becomes unnecessary.
