PURPOSE:The titled controlling agent, consisting of a specific compound as an active constituent and a specific surfactant, capable of controlling effectively harmful miscellaneous algae contaminating in aritficial cultivation of laver protonema without damaging the laver shell protonema and useful for cultivating the above-mentioned protonema. CONSTITUTION:A controlling agent obtained by adding a polyoxyethylene alkyl ether sulfate based surfactant having >=10 HLB value, e.g. a compound expressed by formula II, to an active constituent of an N- phosphonomethylglycine expressed by formula I {R is OH, NR<4>R<5> (R<4> and R<5> are H, lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, etc.), OR<3> (R<3> is alkyl, cyclohexyl, halo lower alkenyl, etc.) or OR<6> [R<6> is salt-forming cation, e.g. alkali (earth) metal, copper, zinc, ammonium, etc.]; R<1> and R<2> are OH in formula I and the strong acid has <=2.5 pK). The amount of the surfactant to be added is 10-70% based on the compound expressed by formula I.
