An apparatus of this type possesses a filling head which has an inflow housing for the filling material, a horizontal filling connection for the valve bag and a rotary-drivable conveyor worm extending horizontally through the inflow housing and through the connection, the inflow housing having a lower axial portion which closely surrounds essentially the lower half of the conveyor worm. To achieve an extraction of air from the filling material conveyed by the conveyor worm, at least the wall regions of the inflow housing which are adjacent to the conveyor worm are permeable to air, but not to the filling material, so that the air can be evacuated from the filling material, adjacent to the air-permeable walls, of the filling head connected to a vacuum. The filling material thus essentially compacted then passes into the valve bag.
