PURPOSE:To manufacture an ingot from metallic scraps of various sizes by packing the scraps into bottomed pipes made of the same metal as the scraps and melting and solidifying them. CONSTITUTION:Metallic scraps 1 of various sizes are packed into two pipes 2 having bottoms 2a made of the same metal as the scraps, and the pipes 2 are horizontally placed over a water-cooled mold 3 so that the bottoms 2a confront each other. When arc is generated between the pipes 2 as consumable electrodes, the scraps 1 melt and drop into the mold 3 together with the pipes 2. A pool of molten metal 5 is formed at the upper part of the mold 3, and at the lower part, molten metal is solidified by cooling with the mold 3 to form an ingot 6.
