The invention relates to the use of specific quaternary ammonium salts in coating baths for the cataphoretic coating of electrically conductive substrates. The quaternary ammonium salts used have the following general formula: < IMG > wherein R1 = H or CH3 R2 = H or CnH2n + 1 R3 = H or < IMG > R4 = CH3 or CnH2n + 1 X? is an anion of an inorganic or organic acid and n is a whole number from 10 to 18. These ammonium salts enable thicker coatings to be deposited, while still exhibiting good adhesion, and are particularly useful in electrodeposition processes.
