PURPOSE:To reduce production of blue white smoke and an unburnt substance and to prevent the generation of noise, by a method wherein a main combustion chamber and an auxiliary combustion chamber are placed in juxtaposition to the top part of a piston, a bank, through which the two chambers are communicated in a way to dent from above a partition, serving to partition the two chambers, is formed. CONSTITUTION:During the starting or low load running of an engine, fuel spray is injected through a nozzle port 17 of the one combustion injection nozzle 4a, the fuel spray is collided with an inner wall 3a of an auxiliary combustion chamber 4 for atomization to produce a fuel film H. In which case, a part of the fuel spray is vaporized momentarily by means of a swirl S to produce fuel-air premixture F, and ignition of the premixture causes gradual and rapid combustion of the fuel film H. meanwhile, during middle and high load running, the fuel spray is injected through a nozzle port 18 of the other fuel injection nozzle 4b toward an inner wall 2a of a main combustion chamber 2. A part of combustion gas in the auxiliary combustion chamber 3 is propagated in flame to the fuel-air premixture F in the main combustion chamber 2 through a bank 16 to slowly burn the cumbustion film H.
