A terminal is intended for electrically conductive connection of a cable (1', 2; 1'', 2'') without previous removal of its insulating sleeve (2', 2''), having a terminal body (3a) in which a contact compression piece (16a), which carries a rib (17a), and a mating compression piece (40a) which hold the cable between them are held such that they can move relative to one another. The force for moving the contact compression piece (16a) and mating compression piece (40a) into a clamping position in which the rib (17a) of the contact compression piece has penetrated the insulating sleeve (2', 2'') and has penetrated into the conductor (1', 1'') is transmitted via a spring element (15a) which compensates for cold flow of the conductor with which contact is made and, at a predetermined spring movement in the compression direction, bridges over a stop (19a) which then carries out the further force transmission. When the terminal is moved from its receptacle position into the clamping position, the jaws (25a) become effective, said jaws (25a) having a plurality of bearing surfaces or edges (26a) which centre the cable on the rib (17a) and, during the process of making contact, hold the cable in the longitudinal centre plane (Y) of the terminal body (3a) passing through the contact compression piece and the mating compression piece. <IMAGE>
