PURPOSE:To lower manufacturing cost, by forming the titled adsorbent from a porous water-insoluble hard gel with an exclusion limit MW of a million - a billion comprising a polymer having hydroxyl groups, of which a part is esterified by sulfuric acid, bonded to a part of the molecule thereof. CONSTITUTION:A porous water-isoluble hard gel with an exclusion limit MW of a million - a billion comprising a polymer having hydroxyl group bonded to at least a part of the molecule thereof is formed and the hydroxyl groups present on the surface of the gel is directly esterified by sulfuric acid to obtain an adsorbent for external circulation treatment. As the polymer having the hydroxyl groups bonded to at least a part of the molecule thereof, a polymer having the units represented by formula I bonded to at least a part of the molecule thereof such as saponified polyvinyl alcohol or ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer is designated. As a method for esterifying the hard gel, there is a method for directly reacting they hydroxyl groups and sulfuric acid in a solvent such as N, N-dimethylformamide.
