PURPOSE:To reduce the price of a device by reading in combination of a main scanning resolution of one kind and plural sub-scanning resolutions and recording with the device in which a recording element is 1/n of resolution in reading in the main scanning direction and the length of a sub-scanning direction is 1/n of the smallest resolution out of the plural resolutions. CONSTITUTION:In a thermosensible recording system, it is assumed that a main scanning resolution M in reading is eight dots per 1mm and the sub-scanning resolution N is 7.7 and 3.85 per 1mm and n=2. A pitch (a) between the heating elements in a recording head in the main scanning direction is represented as [1/Mdivided by 1/n] and the length (b) in the sub-scanning direction as [1/7.7divided by 1/n]. Figure A shows the case when the resolution of a picture signal Ds to be read is 8X7.7 and figure B shows the case when it is 8X3.85. To record the picture signal Ds with a thermosensible recording head shown at figure C, as shown at figures A and B, one picture element signal is generated from picture element signals corresponding to four picture elements and two picture elements respectively. To convert the picture signal Ds to a picture signal DR, in the figure A, the picture element color of a picture element signal R1 corresponding to the picture signal DR is decided from picture element signals S1, S2, S'1 and S'2 which are corresponding to adjacent two lines. In the figure B, as the picture element signal R1 is decided from picture element signals S1 and S2, every two picture element signals in the main scanning direction are converted to one picture element signal.
