The invention relates to a method for measuring elongated workpieces, in particular wood workpieces, by using a gauge roll and a device which determines the length via limit switches, light barriers or the like which are arranged in specific grids. This method is characterised in that the coarse grid dimension is first determined by sensors, which are arranged at specific or arbitrary distances relative to a reference line, e.g. a stop, and passed which the workpiece is guided, up to the grid still reached, and is input into an evaluation device, whereupon the workpiece is moved in the longitudinal direction and the distance covered is measured via a gauge roll or a linear measuring device or a similar device, until the workpiece end releases the sensor last actuated, which the grid dimension has determined, and this measurement result is added to the determined grid dimension in order to determine the total workpiece length in the evaluation device.
