A locking device is provided on each side of a backrest of a rear seat for motor vehicles. Two lock bolts which each have a mushroom head are attached to a part of the body of the vehicle behind the backrest of the rear seat and project through in each case one opening in the rear wall of the backrest of the rear seat into in each case one bore of the locking device. Each locking device has a hairpin spring which projects with a free leg into the bore behind the respective mushroom head and as a result locks it. By means of a lever which is to be actuated manually, the free leg can be raised in a slot of the housing of the locking device to such an extent that it moves out of the bore so that the respective mushroom head releases the backrest of the rear seat and the said backrest can then be folded forwards.
