NEW MATERIAL:A gamma-fluoro-alpha-hydroxycarboxylic acid derivative shown by the formula I (Rf is fluoroalkyl containing one or more F at 1-position; R<1> and R<2> are alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl and R<2> is further H). EXAMPLE:(2S,3S)-2-Hydroxy-3-methyl-4,4,4-trifluorobutanoic acid ethyl ester. USE:An intermediate capable of synthesizing highly stereospecifically a fluorine- containing amino acid useful as a physiologically active substance, especially gamma-fluorovaline. PREPARATION:A compound shown by the formula II (R<3> is each group among R<1>) is reacted with an alkali metallic amide, reacted with an electrophilic reagent, and optionally hydrolyzed to give stereospecifically a compound shown by the formula I.
