PURPOSE:To prevent a voltage of a compression start level during an excessive input from being lowered too much and obtain a wide and dynamic range without applying a bad influence to a picture by providing a control circuit controlling a reference voltage being a signal compression level. CONSTITUTION:A control circuit 1 comprises of a NAM circuit 2 detecting a peak signal from respective color signals supplied from input terminals 1R, 1G, 1B, a direct current amplifiers 7R, 7G, 7B feeding reference voltages PR, PB, PG to variable resistances VR1, VR2, VR3 or the like. The circuit 1 lowers the voltages PR, PG, PB when an output signal level of the circuit 2 is high, and raises the voltages PR, PG, PB when the output signal level is low. The voltage of a compression start level of the respective color signals can be set to a desired value by adjusting respective resistances VR10, VR9, VR8 of the amplifiers 7R, 7G, 7B.
