PRODUCTION OF COMPOSITE WIRE FOR ALUMINUM-CLAD STEEL WIRE

PURPOSE:To produce continuously a composite wire for an Al-clad steel wire by roll-forming an Al tape to a pipe shape along the outside periphery of the steel wire having a sectorial section then welding the contact part of the Al tape and passing the entire part through sizing rolls and dies. CONSTITUTION:The Al tape 5 having a prescribed width is placed along the outside periphery of the steel wire 4 having the sectorial shape and after the tape 5 is formed to the pipe shape around the steel wire 4 by roll forming, the contact part is subjected to TIG welding. The Al pipe 14 is then formed approximately to the sectional shape of the steel wire 4 by sizing rolls and thereafter the pipe is passed through the dies so that the diametrally reduced pipe 14 is fitted tightly to the steel wire 4. The steel wire 4 and the A4l coating layer 14 are thoroughly joined to each other by a drawing die, by which the composite wire 15 is obtd. The continuous production of the composite wire having the Al coating layer of a uniform thickness and having the irregular section is thus made possible.
